“5 billion people lack access to safe, affordable surgical and anaesthesia care when needed”

Our Mission

We strive to support the development of Universal Health Care through surgical, anesthesia, obstetric, and nursing (SAO-N) system strengthening to achieve timely, quality, and affordable surgical care that is sustained by cultivation of competencies in the next generation of social  and value responsible system scientists.

We have partnered with colleagues from a broad array of disciplines around the world to understand and implement SAO-N system situation analysis, solutions to identified barriers, and ultimately, National Surgical, Obstetric and Anesthesia Plan development, dissemination and implementation.

“Surgery is an indivisible, indispensable part of health care”

Our Team

We have a growing team composed of learners at all levels (medical students, residents, fellows, masters students) and a multidisciplinary group of faculty mentors.

“143 million additional surgical procedures are needed each year to save lives and prevent disability”

Our Strategy

We believe that Universal Health Care can be achieved through:

1. Bi-directional, multi-disciplinary partnerships lead by local stakeholder aspirations and goals.

2. In-country situation analysis performed through these partnerships to identify inequities in emergency and essential surgical system access.

3. A complete surgical system situation analysis is essential to inform National Surgical, Obstetric, Anesthesia Planning development, dissemination, and implementation.

“Investment in surgical and anaesthesia services is affordable, saves lives, and promotes economic growth”

Our Partners

Through the Latin American Indicators Research Collaboratory and the Global Surgery Research Unit we have partnered with collaborators throughout Latin America to support the development of Universal Health Care.
