5 billion people lack access to safe, affordable surgical and anaesthesia care when needed

143 million additional surgical procedures are needed each year to save lives and prevent disability

33 million individuals face catastrophic health expenditure due to payment for surgery and anaesthesia each year

Investment in surgical and anaesthesia services is affordable, saves lives, and promotes economic growth

Losses in productivity are estimated at 12.3 trillion USD by 2030 due to this surgical disparity

Surgery is an indivisible, indispensable part of health care

Rutgers Global Surgery strives to provide every individual worldwide equitable access to timely, safe, and affordable essential and emergency surgical care as part of universal healthcare coverage.

How do we do it?

1.  Stakeholder partnership and engagement through education and participatory action research through the Latin American Indicator Research Collaboratory (LAIRC) and Global Surgery Research Unit framework.

2.  Surgical, anesthesia, obstetric and nursing (SOAN) system situation analysis performed by collecting, analyzing and interpreting the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery six core surgical system indicators.

3. Supporting the development of National Surgical, Anesthesia, and Obstetric Plans through stakeholder gap-analysis and prioritization of a completed SOAN system situation analysis.
